Shock and Awe

So, today Ryan found a tiny wrench at the park, brought it home and was playing with it around the house. You know, "fixing" things. I was checking my email when all of a sudden I heard a loud POP! And then, I heard Ryan scream, "THAT SCARED ME!!!" I ran out into the hall and this is what I found:

You can't imagine the string of swear words that just about made it out of my mouth. I don't know what freaked him out more--the actual experience with the outlet or his mother yelling at him for 10 straight minutes.

P.S. He didn't get physically shocked by the outlet, just emotionally shocked by his mother and a show of sparks.

Just can't say goodbye

I pride myself in my ability to part with junk. The DI truck is my friend. However, I have some select items that I just can't part with. I don't know what my deal is.

For example. . .

This box. It's sturdy, has a nice lid. And it's cute. Most boxes of paper come with 10 reams of paper but this one fits 5. It's mini. And anything mini is cute to me. Not just anything can go in this box. In fact I can't seem to find anything worthy to go in it. But, I just can't bear to part with it either.

Then. . .this deodorant. I got such a good deal on it--I think I spent .25 for each stick. However, I've developed a dislike of the scent (no offense to Soft & Dry aficionados). And, I can't throw out perfectly good deodorant! I could donate it to a shelter. . .but I feel lame driving to a shelter and handing them 3 sticks of Soft & Dry. Deodorant anyone?

Finally. . . my favorite. This one is pure delusion on my part.

After I graduated from BYU, I worked there full-time and was able to take classes for free. I decided to take fun classes that I had always wanted to take but never did. So. . .I took Basket Weaving. Let me tell you this class was challenging. I don't know where all the basket weaving jokes come from! Each basket was complex to make, took HOURS to weave and rubbed the skin right off my fingers. Anyways, I have lots of extra basket making stuff that I'd like to use someday to make another basket. What am I thinking? There are days that I don't hardly have time to go to the bathroom! So, let's face it. I'm not going to have HOURS to whip out some Appalachian-style basket. In the meantime (like for the last 7 years) I continue to haul it to every place we move to in the hopes that someday I'll be able weave again.

Do you have any junk that you just can't get rid of?

First Day of Preschool

Today was Ryan's first day of school. He's a mainstream kid in a preschool for kids who have minor physical disabilities. We're very excited about this program. Since he'll be around kids with various physical limitations, he'll be able to develop a unique perspective and understanding of people and their struggles. There's a great adult to student ratio (3 adults, 7 kids!), extra attention by various professionals (like occupational and speech therapists) and he'll be very prepared for Kindergarten. His teacher seems like an angel--patient and warm. The other awesome part is that it's FREE. Anything to save us money around here is much appreciated. Thanks to my friend Whitney who told me about it. Her son, Joel, is also a mainstream kid in Ryan's class so it's nice that they have each other. And Hallelujah for me. I've been needing a break during the day. Surprisingly enough, "just" having 2 kids for a few hours feels like a break. Hooray for school!

The obligatory first day of school shot:).

Juliet's Blessing

Today was Juliet's blessing day at church. Everything went really well. The weather was beautiful. We actually made it to church on time--those who are in our ward know that's a miracle. Juliet was a good baby and didn't cry at all--though apparently she spit up during it. Rich didn't seem nervous even though he was:). The blessing itself was beautiful and was exactly what a mom would want for her little girl. After church we had lunch at my parents' house and ate way too much good food. It was nice seeing my brothers' families, aunt and uncle and their kids and Rich's parents.

Here's Juliet in her cute blessing dress that my mom made. It's hard to tell but there's really cute embroidered daisies along the bottom of the dress.

Here's the clan--my parents, my brother Dan and his family, my brother Doug and his kids, my Aunt Janie and Uncle Phil and their kids, us, and Rich's parents. Thanks to Elaine for being the organist and photographer.

Miniature golfing

Ryan's most favorite activity in the whole wide world is miniature golf. Last year, after we took him to Disneyland, I asked him, "Ryan, what's your favorite--Disneyland or Golfland?" and . . he said Golfland. Why did we just spent hundreds of dollars taking him to the "happiest place on earth" when we could have taken him to the local mini-golf place, dropped $8 and he'd be just as happy? If not happier! Oh well. Tonight, Ryan convinced us to take Rich's parents mini-golfing. We had loads of fun.

Ryan's improving and starting to follow some rules. Ok, one rule--you don't throw the ball into the hole, you hit it in there with the club.

Macie tries to "help" us by intercepting our golfballs and putting them into the holes. It's cute but she's basically another obstacle on the course. Maybe in like 5 years we can start keeping score again.
